Introducing big government
Article Abstract:
Adam Smith's 'An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations' was published in 1776, and argued that self-interest can be harnessed to promote general prosperity. The division of labor allows for specialization and an increase in productivity, but trade is needed for a division of labor to take place. This means that interference with trade will hinder economic growth. Universal education can make life more interesting for workers, while the market removes some privileges from the powerful.
