The portable phone targeted at children, to be launched on 24 August 1998 by Mobilkom in Austria, was developed by Sagem of France. The phone costs Sch 2,790 and calls Sch 4.20 per minute between 12.00 and 14.00 and between 17.00 and 19.00 hours from Mondays to Fridays and during the weekend. At other times, the calls cost Sch 9.80 per minute. Payment takes place by pre-paid card. In-coming calls are possible up to 12 months after the card has been used up. Mobilkom estimates the target group of the 5-12-year-olds at 160,000 children in Austria. Market research suggests that 25% of children would like a portable phone of their own. Portugal is said to be the only country with special portable phones for children. There about 20,000 units were sold in the first 9 months.

Connect Austria is the third mobile phone operator in Austria. It is to start offering 1,800-MHz services in Tyrol and Vorarlberg on 30 July 1998. By the end of summer 1998 the service will be available throughout Austria. Customers will use dual-band phones that allow calls in the 900-MHz networks of Mobilkom, Max.mobil and operators abroad. The company has indicated that it is not interested in a price war. Connect is planning investments of a total of Sch 12.5bn.

Ericsson Schrack BusinessCom reports that it has managed to cut computer costs by half by replacing a solution by SAP of Germany with Navision. Ericsson Schrack BusinessCom, which took over the distribution of Ericsson PBX systems at the end of 1998 and repairs portable phones, expects to make profits on a turnover of Sch 900mn in 1999.
