Nummernplan umstritten
Article Abstract:
The Austrian post criticises that the planned new telephone number system to be introduced in Austria from 1999 would result in costs of Sch 1.2-2.3bn. 70% of the existing telephone numbers would have to be changed. The post developed an alternative concept which it claims would require the change of only 10% of telephone numbers and be much cheaper to implement. The plans are to be submitted to the experts' committee in charge on 26 Jun 1998. According to the original plan, decided in December 1997, the around 1,000 4-digit area codes in Austria are to be replaced by 26 2-digit regional codes. New telecoms providers are to be allocated numbers starting with 9, while numbers starting with 1,4,5,6 are reserved for special services. The post now suggests to keep the existing area code system, which still has a sufficient amount of free numbers, and make available any desired amount of numbers to new providers. The new providers accuse the post of playing for time to avoid competition.
