European markets: perfumes & fragrances
Article Abstract:
The perfumes and fragrances markets in the five major European countries of France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK witnessed greater competition and the consequent discounting of prices from 1994 to 1998. As retail prices were slashed, premium brands became more affordable and led to surges in demand in many countries. Unisex products dominated the markets during the four-year period as these attracted an unprecedented share of the large youth consumer segment. Manufacturers of women's scents expanded their product lines and introduced new brands owing to the shift to lighter fragrances. All markets posted sales increases in 1998 compared to 1997 levels.

Perfumes and fragrances
Article Abstract:
The French market for women's perfumes and fragrances posted a healthy growth of 10.3% for the period of 1992 to 1996 despite threats of economic slowdown and downward pressure on perfumes' and fragrances' prices. A market value of FF7,4 billion was recorded for the year 1996 with 'other fragrances' constituting 70% of total sales while 'perfume and eau de parfum' and 'perfumed gift packs' having a market share of 19.7% and 10.3%, respectively. Introduction of value added products, such as repackaging of expensive perfumes into smaller and cheaper sizes, boosted the French market.

Perfumes and fragrances in Germany
Article Abstract:
A number of trends are observed in Germany's fragrances and perfumes market. Total sales of the perfumes and fragrances market in 1993 remained at 1.37 billion deutsch marks, the same as that of 1992. This zero growth is attributed to increased taxes and interest rates which reduced consumer spending on luxury items. The eau de parfum market had the highest sales at 742 million deutsch marks in 1993. Information on major manufacturers are presented.
