Exit the general
Article Abstract:
Former International Services Intelligence director Lieutenant General Hameed Gul's retirement from the military establishment concurs with the evolving Pakistani policies concerning Afghanistan. In accordance with this new initiative, Pakistan has decided to halt its supply of arms to Afghan guerillas. A central point to this change in Pakistani foreign relations is the government's announcement of support for a United Nations (UN) peace plan that will call all Afghans to a consultative meeting. The government further stated that it will respect any decision reached at the UN-convened assembly.

Uneasy truce; ethnic hostilities simmer under the surface
Article Abstract:
The peaceful atmosphere in Afghanistan, following the Aug 29, 1992, ceasefire between the ruling Jamiate Islami and Gulbuddin Hekmatyar's Hizbe Islami, may be misleading as reports indicate increasing hostility between Northern Afghanistan's newly-formed Pashtun and non-Pashtun groups. Following criticism from fellow Pakistanis, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's government claimed that it helped bring about the ceasefire by closing Pakistan's border with Afghanistan and sending a peacemaking delegation to Afghanistan.

Terrain of tension. Tajik civil war spreads to Afghanistan
Article Abstract:
Rebels in Tajikistan have bought Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, threatening to expand the civil war in that member of the Commonwealth of Independent States. The conflict erupted in Jul 1993 with four rebel groups opposing the pro-communist government that ousted a ruling coalition in Dec 1992. Russia and other states support the Tajik leaders militarily, but the conflict is spilling into Afghanistan. It is similar in many ways to the recent Afghan war.
