FRANCE: ADVANTAGES OF ELECTRONIC LABELS
Article Abstract:
The Leclerc store at Lisieux in the Calvados departement, which was inaugurated in 1998, has chosen electronic labels to indicate its prices on the shelves. This system will eliminate differences between the price on shelves and the price at check-out stands and will save personnel costs, since it will no longer be necessary to change the labels. The gains in performance obtained from this system have made it possible to improve customer services, and the customers find the new labels clearer and more informative. According to Philippe Catteau, who manages the SES company which developed the technology used by the Lisieux store, these labels are becoming used in internal information (stock information, and order proposals) and communication tools between employees and clients, who have vocal pagers or screens on their shopping carts.

FRANCE: A LOOK AT THE COLD CHAIN
Article Abstract:
The DGCCRF, the competition and fraud watchdog, has carried out several surveys concerning the protection of the cold chain in big food stores. These surveys show that the hypermarkets have the resources to control hygiene, while supermarkets still have work to do and the small shops and discount stores either do not monitor it or they are behind. Temperature inspections are less frequent in cold rooms than in the store display cases. Defrosting periods are not always followed and sometimes products wait at room temperature for three or four hours before the stores open. The DGCCRF found many dilapidated cases and others which were overloaded. The DGCCRF is urging manufacturers, transporters, logistics services, and retailers to work together and to set up good practice guides.
