FRANCE: COMPAQ ENTERS DIRECT SELLING BUSINESS
Article Abstract:
While Dell's direct selling strategy seems to be increasingly successful (already the leader in Wintel servers in the US in 1998, the company recently took 27% of the market of Wintel workstations by volume world-wide), rivals are entering this new distribution business. Hewlett-Packard and IBM will follow in Dell's steps in the early 2000, while Compaq France recently opened its Compaq Store site (www.achat.compaq.fr) which targets those of its customers which would shift supplier to buy from a direct specialist. Though the shift to direct selling seems to be unavoidable given Dell's success and the need for reducing distribution costs, Compaq France believes in its own solution which offers the best of both the direct distribution circuit and the conventional network whose technical skills, clientele relations and range services are strong assets compared to direct selling specialists.

Painter Classic reproduit des effets naturels
Article Abstract:
MetaCreations has launched a new package as part of its Painter range. Painter Classic uses the Natural-Media technology (which numerically reproduces painting effects) to enable the user to create a very realistic painting on the computer. The user is given the choice of different sized brushes, and can choose whether to draw on a blank page or even stylise numerical photos to give the impression they are hand-painted. Compatible with both PC and Mac computers, Painter Classic (retail price FFr 750) is presently only available in English, the French version will be available in September 1998.
