FRANCE: FRANCE TELECOM SHIFTS TO IP TECHNOLOGY
Article Abstract:
France Telecom, which negotiated the price of the licence with Ilex (which supplied the French telephone carrier with its Intranex solution), would not unveil the value of its contract with this company. Intranex is one of the elements which will allow the French group to shift its computing system to the IP technology during the 1998-2002 period. The project, called Aristotle, includes Archimedes, a section dedicated, among other tasks, to introduce an IP-based Web-to-host solution. IP will fully replace the existing, X.25 protocol which will allow a direct connection between MVS hosts and the group's general servers, instead of today's servers in charge of converting X.25 into IP. Aristotle is supposed to cut France Telecom's Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) through a reduction in maintenance and operating spending.

FRANCE: IP SERVICES USERS INCREASE BY 200%
Article Abstract:
According to a recently published survey, the number of IP services users will increase 200% by 2002, with turnover up from FFr 13bn in 2000 to FFr 38bn in 2002. Company transacted business has consolidated its position, and use by the general public has not diminished. Internet providers are concentrating on one particular service, where in 1999 all were offering access, home pages and services. A new group in the market are the virtual providers like Claranet, E-Brands or Internet Telecom which offer companies flexibility without high financial investment.
