FRANCE: THE SPECIALITY BEER MARKET

Two groups lead the speciality beer market in France; Heineken (with the Pelforth Brune, George Killian's, Murphy's, Affligem, Wieckse Witte, Lowenbrau and Pilsen Urquell brands), and Kronenbourg (Kilkenny, Guinnness, Wel Scotch, Grimbergen and Brugs). Kronenbourg registered a 28% increase in sales volumes with these 5 brands in the space of 1 year <1997-1998>. Brasseries Stella Artois is the other major player in the sector, with the Leffe, Hoegaarden, Spaten, La Becasse, Sol, Rolling Rock and Labatt Ice brands. Leffe is the leading brand of speciality beer in France, with a 17% market share (by volume), up 6% in the year ending August 1998, followed by Desperados with 7.9% (+50%), Hoeggarden with 6.3% (+25%), Jeanlain with 5.4% (+6.9%), George Killian's with 4.2% (-15%), Adelscott with 4% (-3.4%), Grimberger with 3.2% (+50%) and finally, Corona with 2.9% (-6%). Overall sales have slowed as the market becomes more mature, with a 6% progression expected in 1998, following a growth of 17% in 1997 (by volume).

FRANCE: SAINT-LANDELIN BEER IN CANS LAUNCHED
Article Abstract:
Saint-Landelin, ancient French abbey beer, which dates back to the 11th century, is now available in 500 millilitre (ml) metal cans as well as the original 250 ml and 750 ml bottles. The flavour should not be affected by the new packaging.

FRANCE: ORGANIC BEER VOTED BEER OF THE YEAR

At a recent awards ceremony, in which more than 400 different beers competed, members of the Danish association of beer enthusiasts voted the French organic beer, La Fraiche de l'Aunelle (Duyck), as the beer of the year 2000.
