FRANCE: PRODUCTS WITH GMO ON STORE SHELVES
Article Abstract:
According to the European Bureau of Consumer Federations, 60% if the ordinary products - such as oil, sweet biscuits, and appetisers - sold in supermarkets and hypermarkets contain genetically modified organisms (GMO) without information being indicated on the packaging. The labelling requirement for products containing GMO excludes products for which there is no established risk, those for which the DNA or soy or sweet corn protein are no longer detectable and those for which GMO are only additives. In order to offer consumers products without GMO, certain manufacturers, such as the Grands Moulins de Paris, or Bruce Foods Europe, buy only raw materials which are guaranteed to contain no GMO. Major groups, such as Nestle, inform the consumers of the presence of GMO in their products by putting this information on the labels. Nestle also wants to set up a consumer service and information brochures. Leclerc is asking all of its sweet corn and soy suppliers to guarantee products which contain no GMO. Intermarche has developed an explanatory leaflet which will be distributed in its stores and Carrefour is striving to ban GMO from products bearing its own brand, and to create subsidiaries with suppliers who must comply with a specifications sheet.
