FRANCE: REVIEW OF ELECTRONIC TRADE
Article Abstract:
According to forecasts by Mediangles, the electronic trade data centre, electronic sales will represent FFr 3.3bn in 1998, compared with about FFr 1.2bn in 1997, a growth due to the increase in the number of Internet users rather than to an increase in the amount of on-line orders. Data-processing equipment is by far the principal product purchased on the Internet, with a turnover of FFr 1.3bn in 1998, followed by airplane tickets, representing FFr 889mn, software at FFr 269mn, records at FFr 207mn, while food represents only FFr 22mn in turnover. According to Mediangles, there are 2.9mn Internet users in France, both only 2.5mn of them really use the Internet network; the rest use only the e-mail function. Eighty percent of people who buy on the Web are men, and 60% of them are of upper socio-economic status.
