FRANCE: SALES OF DOMESTIC APPLIANCES
Article Abstract:
Sales of domestic appliances did well in France in 1998 although the market was affected by the crisis in Russia, Brazil and Asian countries. In 1998, sales of small domestic appliances increased 9% in volume and 7.7% in value. Sales of major appliances reached 10.6mn units (up 3.9% from 1997) and generated a FFr 27.7bn turnover - a 3.6% increase from 1997. Manufacturers have benefited from increased demand, the recovery of various European economies, the recent taste for coloured appliances and a general taste for the so-called Euro-Design. In France, sales of washing machines account for 20% of overall sales of major appliances in volume (25.6% in value) followed by sales of refrigerators (18.6% in volume and 21.11% in value) and sales of microwave ovens (15% in volume and 7.8% in value). Sales of home appliances represented 42% of total sales of appliances, followed by hygiene and beauty appliances (hair-removal products) at 19%, breakfast appliances (such as toasters) at 16% and cooking appliances at 14%. Although the market anticipates a 2% increase in sales (in volume) for 1999, some have expressed concern over the price war initiated by super and hypermarkets which offer for instance microwave ovens at FFr 390 making it difficult for the consumer to assess the real price. Some manufacturers are thinking of quitting this distribution channel such as Panasonic which stopped offering its vacuum-cleaners in French hypermarkets.
