FRANCE: STRATEGY FOR CHRONOPOST/E-LIKO ALLIANCE

The French Internet express parcel delivery service joint venture, e-liko, created by Magellis, and Saturn in 1999, has been joined by Chronopost, the parcel division of La Poste. The new entity, Chronopost e-liko, aims to generate 10% of its activity outside of France by 2002, reach FFr 1bn in turnover in 2003, and list on the stock exchange. It also intends to extend its coverage to more cities in France, then expand to Europe, targeting Germany, UK, Portugal, Italy, Spain, and Belgium. The entity will also benefit from Chronopost's logistics service, Eurodispatch-PubliTrans. The new company will be held 45% by Chronopost, 40% by Saturn, 10% by Magellis, and 5% by Eurodispatch-PubliTrans.

ROMANIA: MICHELIN BUYS TOFAN PLANTS

Michelin of Clermont-Ferrand, France, tyremaker has agreed to purchase a retreading facility, two plants, and a franchise from Tofan of Roumania, leading tyre-maker, with a view to serving emerging markets and strengthening its position in eastern and central Europe. The franchise comprises 2,000 sales outlets. According to a Michelin spokesman, tyremakers including Michelin are acting cautiously in eastern Europe. Michelin Romania intends to expand the plants, which have a workforce of 3,300, and make an annual turnover of US$ 80mn producing 450,000 tyres for lorries and 4mn car tyres. Michelin has no intention of cutting jobs, but intends to boost productivity and improve quality.

JAPAN: STRATEGY FOR MICHELIN

The French tyre maker, Michelin, will be introducing a lot more new products than before in Japan, and counts upon the support of its partnership dealers, in order to increase its market share. To do this, it aims to see double figure growth on the tyre replacement market. At present the French group holds a 5% share, despite the fact that 70% of Japanese people know of Michelin. It will also be cooperating in order to market its flat tyre security system, Pax System.
