FRANCE: SUCCESSFUL GAME SOFTWARE PUBLISHERS
Article Abstract:
In turnover terms, the Havas/Cendant tandem (US$ 144mn in 1998, 6.9% of the market) and Infogrames Entertainment (US$ 68mn, 3.3% share) have joined the top ten in the PC game software market world-wide. Havas/Cendant is the leading player in France with a turnover of EUR 503mn in 1998, followed by Infogrames with EUR 305mn, Ubisoft (EUR 870mn), Cryo (156mn) and Titus Interactive (52mn). While US publishers tend to limit their acquisitions to their own country, French (and European) rivals target the whole world (though the giant Japanese market remains to be conquered), and put a strong emphasis on prospection. For instance, Havas Interactive, which plans to put a foothold on the console game software business in 2000, will go and visit Japanese studios and distributors during the next months. Another reason for the increasing success of French publishers is the trend in making a successful game designer a star in the US, resulting in a rocketing budget which may put an end to a new game's project. In addition to their strong creativity, French publishers are on top in terms of the hardware innovation. The only problem is there are no French PC or game consoles manufacturers in France, a strong point for Japan and the US. France is the third largest country in Europe with 18% of the game software sales, behind Germany (29%) and the UK (39%). Leisure software products totalled 23mn units in 1999 in France (51% in console games, 49% in leisure CD-Roms), up from 18mn in 1998 with a turnover of EUR 780mn (56% in consoles), up from 690mn in 1998.

FRANCE: THE WEB SITE HOSTING MARKET
Article Abstract:
Though very fragmented with over 250 players in 2000 according to Markess International (not including Web agencies which provide their key clients with hosting services), the Web site hosting market in France is dominated by France Telecom with 29.6% of this market worth EUR 200mn this year. The second largest player, IBM Global Services took 4.2% of the market followed by Cable & Wireless ISDNet with 3.8%, etc. The following 12 players took between 3.5% (Atos-Origin) and 1.6% (Matra Grolier Netservices) of the market. This market should reach EUR 850mn in turnover in 2003 on the basis of a 63% yearly growth according to Markess which expects static Web sites to account for a mere 38% of the market in 2003 instead of 75% in 2000. Applications will be more complex and critical, according to the survey.
