FRANCE: THE COMPUTER MARKET IN 1999
Article Abstract:
In 1999, Apple ranked eighth in computer sales, up 46.5%; Unika ranked seventh, jumping 115%; Fujitsu Siemens, which ranked sixth, dropped 31%; Dell's sales climbed 69%, overtaking Hewlett Packard; IBM ranked third with a 57% rise in deliveries, holding a 12.4% market share; Packard-Bell/NEC/Zenith ranked second with a 13.3% market share, while Compaq led with a 15% market share, but it rose only 7.8%. According to IDC France, 4.5mn micro computers were sold in France in 1999, totalling FFr 36.3bn, up 8% in value and 21.7% in volume. Because company investments slowed with the approach of the year 2000, this market rose only 13%. The general public market drove the rise, with many offers of "free" computers, micro-computers sold with Internet subscriptions, etc. The household equipment rate for computers reached 27%.
