FROM BAD TO WORSE
Article Abstract:
The Indian tyre industry is passing through a tough phase following a slump in the local automotive industry. Tyre producers especially for commercial vehicles and light commercial vehicle tyre producers are facing difficulties in maintaining the volumes. A 7.9 percent fall in the exports to Rs221 crore during April-June 1998 (Rs240 crore in April-June 1997) due to the South East Asian crisis, has also added to the woes. The exports to the Asian region has decreased by 43 percent thereby affecting almost all tyre producers. The industry may face difficulties during 1998-99, as the local industry is showing no signs of recovery and the export avenues are also declining steadily. (ag)
