HONEY, IT'S GOOD TO BEE
Article Abstract:
According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimates, India has the potential to raise 5 million bee colonies and produce 6 lakh tonnes of honey. Of this, the commercial production in 1995-96 was 9,650 tonnes of honey from around 8 lakh bee colonies. Now, bee-keeping is done with both the rearable hive species - Apis cerana and Apis mellifera - in India. Rearing of Apis cerana is mainly done in southern India and a few regions of northern and north-eastern States of India. Raising of Apis mellifera is done in the Indo-Gangetic plains of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. The leading honey producing States are Punjab, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir, West Bengal and Assam. Now, there are around 2.76 lakh bee-keepers in India and the average honey production per colony increased to 8.15 kg in 1993-94 from 1.50 kg in 1953-54. Around two-thirds of the honey production is from the forests, collected by the traditional honey-gatherers. Tribals of West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka engage themselves in honey-gathering. The per capita consumption of honey in India is 8.4 gm due to lack of awareness regarding its dietary values. It is mainly used in the pharmaceutical and ayurvedic industry. In the last 2 years, India exported 1,000-1,500 tonnes of honey, mainly to Europe. (gsh)
