Flickers of economic light
Article Abstract:
A number of Eastern European economies have performed well, in contrast to Russia. These countries includes Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic, where economic growth has revived after an initial drop in growth following the move toward a market economy. There is more economic equality in these successful countries, and privatization has not enriched a narrow group of people, as occurred in Russia. Life expectancy has increased in these countries between 1992 and 1997, while in Russia it has dropped. These countries have a history of looking toward the west and experience of a market economy, both before control by the Soviet Union and to some extent during the Soviet period.
