Flying into trouble
Article Abstract:
Japan Airlines (JAL) is in financial difficulties, having lost money for seven consecutive years and it has spent 80% of its financial reserves. However, the airline headquarters are palatial and appear over-staffed. JAL executives are not facing up to the company's economic problems it may collapse unless action is taken. The president plans to set up a cheap, more competitive domestic airline called JAL Express and reduce staffing levels but these steps not may be enough. Drastic staffing cuts and lower salaries are needed.

The curse of natural resources
Article Abstract:
The enormous natural resources that led the World Bank to recently declare Australia the world's wealthiest nation are deceptive, encouraging a destructive form of social and economic development. Resource-rich countries tend to see growth as a zero-sum game, with wealth going to those lucky enough to stumble across the right resources. They also promote a weak currency to favor commodity traders. Recent economic success stories build on the human mind as a resource, without needing massive capital investment.
