Foundation of Taiwan's property sector is rumbling: plunge in applications for building permits suggest shakier future for developers, sales agents
Article Abstract:
The report of the Taiwanese Economic Ministry regarding the 23% decline in building permit application filings in August 1998 compared to a year ago has alarmed many members of the Taiwanese real estate industry, noting that the decline in application may be a manifestation of the Asian economic crisis on their economy. This worry comes at the heels of the Taiwan government's downgrading of its gross domestic product growth forecast from 6% to 5.3% for 1998. Industry reports show that there was a 20% decrease in the number of buildings sold in the first half of 1998, amounting to only 189,000 and that the average number of workers in the industry fell to only 463,000.

Taiwan firms monitor future
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's manufacturers of computer monitors whose profits have been devastated in 1998 due to a supply saturation hope that new, space-saving liquid-crystal-display (LCD) monitors will help them rebound. A mass market for LCDs may be difficult to realize in the near term, though several offices have already started to use LCD monitors, since the monitors are too costly for most personal computer buyers.
