Signs of optimism for increasing democracy in Asia
Article Abstract:
Political observers note that the establishment of the headquarters of the Association of Asian Election Officials in Manila, Philippines is a significant step in the establishment of Western-style democracy in Asia. Manila was chosen because the Philippines has the longest running electoral history in Asia, and the Philippine electoral system is currently being made more responsive and less prone to political corruption. The acquisition of modern computers for vote tabulation, the existence and activity of citizen watch groups, and the active role of media in monitoring elections help make the Philippines a model for Asian electoral reforms.

An observer compares Indonesia's protests, then and now
Article Abstract:
The 1998 civilian protests in Indonesia can be compared with those in 1996, where both were led by student movements. In 1966, the students were aligned with the military, whose resentment towards then President Sukarno was evident. While in 1998, the sentiments of the military were leaning towards Pres Suharto. The only fuel for the 1998 student protest was the economic crisis and the resentment of the middle class. Peaceful change in Indonesia can come with the government's openness to enact economic reforms.

Signs show things are far from OK
Article Abstract:
Posthandover Hong Kong has not been all that successful as the government of the Special Administrative Region failed to show strong leadership in dealing with the Asian economic crisis. The decision of the city's chief executive, Tung Chee Hwa, to unveil a $4 bil stimulus package is seen as a lamentable bow to pressure from property developers.
