Free trade in peril
Article Abstract:
The World Trade Organization (WTO) faces a dispute as to who should be the new head, while world trade growth dropped to 3.5% in 1998 compared with 10% in 1997. The WTO has a key role when there are risks of a resurgent protectionism, but its rulings are not always heeded. Former New Zealand trade minister, Mike Moore, should take on the post of WTO chief, though some developing countries may oppose this, and may also see problems with emerging markets as linked to too much liberalization. The WTO should itself be reformed to become more transparent and open.

Trade and wages: what effect does free trade have on the gap between skilled and unskilled workers' pay?
Article Abstract:
The Stolper-Samuelson theory on the effect of trade on income disparity between skilled and unskilled workers does not seem to hold true. Wages for both types of workers in developed and developing countries are discussed.
