Freedom of the air: Vietnam irked by Moscow-based broadcasts
Article Abstract:
The improved relations between Russia and Vietnam have been threatened once more due to controversial broadcasts coming from a private radio station based in Moscow, Russia. The Moscow-based Radio Irina has been airing shows extolling democracy and allowing Vietnamese dissidents a medium by which they can inform the world about their cause since Jul 20, 1992. Vietnam has protested the broadcasts of Radio Irina out of fear that the views being advocated in the radio will coalesce support for political reform. The Vietnamese government feels that political reforms might hinder the liberalization of the economy.

Great Leader's gulag: Siberian timber camps are relics of the Cold War
Article Abstract:
North Korea is continuing to operate timber camps on Russian territory in Siberia despite the recent worsening of relations with Russia and the objections of some Russian officials who regard the camps as a violation of human rights. Secret agreements between the former Soviet government and North Korea allowed North Korean security agents to set up the camps and to pursue and recapture escapees. Although the Russian government has terminated the original agreements, the camps will probably remain because of the hard currency they bring in to the local Russian Far East economy.

Russian handicap: Moscow looks east but the picture is bleak
Article Abstract:
Asean diplomats have advised Russia to develop stronger ties with Asia but analysts say that growth and trade opportunities for Russia are greater in the east. Russian Foreign Minister Andrei Kozyrev has devoted attention to economic issues and border disputes and developed Euro-Atlantic relations at the expense of Asia. Meanwhile, Pres Boris Yeltsin is trying to make amends for a lack of Asian ideology in his politics by strengthening military ties with China and visiting Seoul, South Korea.
