Frozen food in France
Article Abstract:
French production of frozen food totalled 2.3 million t in 1993, up 20% from 1989, with around 25% of total tonnage accounted for by quick-frozen vegetables. Apparent consumption of all types of frozen food totalled almost 2 million t in 1993. Supemarkets and hypermarkets account for some 60% of the retail market, with home service outlets accounting for 21% and freezer centres 15%. The two main producers of quick-frozen foods are Nestle's Findus and Buitoni brands.

Frozen vegetables have a 20.8% share of the frozen food market and sales are expected to rise by 7.2% by the year 2001, with the frozen vegetable market forecast to be worth 937 million pounds sterling by then. Manufacturers will have to be aware of eating trends and cater for the increasing number of people who live alone if they want this growth to continue. Value growth is most likely to be in new products such as exotic vegetables and different potato products.
