Fuel cells hit the road
Article Abstract:
Fuel cells are being used in carsin trials in California. Ford and Daimler Chrysler are both developing this technology and the first two cars from a planned fleet comprising 45 buses and cars are to undergo trials over a period of four years, mainly in Los Angeles and environs. There is concern that the cars may not appeal to consumers due to their price, though costs have come down though cutting down the amount of platinum needed, and costs may be reduced further.

How green is your hydrogen?
Article Abstract:
Automotive companies are developing fuel cells as environmentally less damaging than conventional fuel, though their environmental impact depends in part on the source of the hydrogen that they use. The major companies are tending to ignore natural gas as a hydrogen source, and they tend to focus on methanol and 'clean' gasoline, with the most polluting elements removed. This is cause for concern since the least improvement comes from those two technologies.
