Optimism emerges in Japan
Article Abstract:
A positive note to the otherwise gloomy outlook of the Japanese economy was provided by the over-the-counter stock market which has posted some gains. Other indicators also had a positive outlook, especially in bankruptcies which have fallen along with inventories of goods. Economists, however, were cautious in predicting a full-blown recovery for Japan. They pointed out that the rally posted by small companies' shares had not spread to the markets for larger companies. In addition, the positive indicators may be the result of government efforts to revive the economy.

Individual investors start to show interest in Japanese stocks: but some think they may not stick around long enough to give shares a long-term boost
Article Abstract:
The new surge of individuals investing in the Tokyo stock market has made the early months of 1999 the most active months for individual investors which is comparable only to the Mar 1991 record. The renewed interest has given a giddy atmosphere to the securities industry where brokers' profits are up markedly. However, the sustainability of such interest depends on Japan's economic recovery.
