Furniture and furnishings in Belgium
Article Abstract:
In 1997, sales of Belgian furniture rose 1% to 78.6 billion Belgian Francs (BFr). Some 92% of sales is accounted for by wooden and upholstered furniture. Production of carpets and carpeting grew 5% to 514 million square metres, of which the lion share is made up of tufted products. Belgium is currently the largest carpet exporter in the world, shipping over 90% of production out of the country. Market data on the Belgian furniture and furnishings industries is given.

In 1997, French production of furniture grew 1% to 37.4 billion French Francs (FFr), representing 3.4% of total French industry, with the exception of the energy sector. Output of floorcoverings was up 7%, with production of textile floorcoverings up to over 100 million square metres. An overview of key trends is given, along with details of market and output data, foreign trade, consumption trends, and forecasts for the future.

Furniture sales in France reached about FFr88 billion in 1998, including household, second hand and office furniture. Household sales of new furniture were worth about FFr57.2 billion. French retail furniture market is analysed in detail.
