GACL H1 NET DECLINES 17%

Gujarat Ambuja Cements Ltd (GACL) has posted a 17 percent lower net profit at Rs46.4 crore in the first half year ended December 1998 (Rs56 crore in the first half ended December 1997). Its sales have increased by 8.6 percent to Rs553.7 crore (Rs509.7 crore). Its operating profit has increased by one percent to Rs161.2 crore (Rs159.2 crore). It has posted an operating profit margin of 35 percent (36 percent). Interest cost has increased by 11 percent to Rs55.2 crore (Rs49.6 crore). Its depreciation has increased by 17 percent to Rs59.1 crore. It produced 2.7 million tonnes of cement in the first half of 1998-99 (2.29 million tonnes). Gujarat Ambuja Cement Ltd (GACL) has appointed four top executives in the company as whole-time directors on the board. The new directors are president Mr PB Kulkarni, chief executive (projects) Mr AV Rao, company secretary Mr BL Taparia and treasurer Mr AC Singhvi. These appointments are part of a succession plan of the managing director and promoter, Mr N Sekhsaria, to move GACL away from being an owner-driven company. (khr)

GACL TO EXPAND THROUGH ACQUISITION ROUTE

Gujarat Ambuja Cement Limited (GACL), a cement producer has decided to take up the acquisition route to expand. GACL which is targeting an annual growth of 30 percent also plans to take up greenfield projects to expand itself. GACL proposes to focus on managing its costs by reducing the gap between itself and the final consumer. It sold five million tonnes of cement under the Ambuja brand during 1997-98. (ag)
