GERMANY: TANTALUM CHIPS FROM SIEMENS MATSUSHITA
Article Abstract:
The German Heidenheim-based capacitor division of the German-Japanese joint venture Siemens Matsushita Components wants to strengthen its position in the world market for tantalum chip capacitors. The company recently tripled the annual production capacity to 1bn tantalum chips by opening a new factory in Evora, Portugal. From 2001, the factory is to have a production capacity of 1.6bn tantalum chips. Until now, the company has produced tantalum chips only in Heidenheim. Later on, another factory might be built in Asia. At present, Siemens Matsushita is ranked only seventh in the world market for tantalum chips. However, it is the only producer of tantalum chips in the European Union and is there a leading supplier for the automotive industry. The company sees catch-up demand in Asia and America and wants to strengthen activities there. In the fiscal year 1997/1998, tantalum chips accounted for DM 90mn of the DM 450mn turnover of Siemens Matsushita's capacitor division. The turnover from tantalum chips should increase to DM 200mn by 2000. In 1997/1998, total turnover of Siemens Matsushita Components amounted to DM 1.71bn, of which Germany accounted for 21%, other European countries for 38%, the Asian/Pacific region 17%, America 10% and in-house demand for 13%.
