GM plans to cut 25,000 jobs by '08 in restructuring

General Motors Corp. is planning to cut 25,000 jobs in a North American restructuring by 2008. The impetus is high costs and declining revenue with a decreasing United States market share, the automobile giant posted $1.3 billion in losses for the first quarter. Attrition and eary-retirement programs have been in place since 2002.

General Motors Corp. of the United States is planning job-cuts of 30,000, largely by attrition, and to close nine North American manufacturing factories. The reorganization strategy is projected to save the automobile company $7 billion. Further job-cuts of seven percent of salaried staff are planned in 2006.
