GVC issue draws little interest, but risk takers may reap profit
Article Abstract:
GVC Corp.'s stocks increased by 16% in Feb. 1995 but its recent global depository receipt (GDR) issue continued to sell about 11% below its share price. Some analysts believe that the low interest on GVC's GDRs signals a major shift in investor attitudes, away from GDRs and toward less risky investments. Moreover, they note that in Taiwanese stock market has already been saturated by GDRs, making GVC's issue less attractive. However, other analysts state that the poor interest in GVC's issue is only an isolated case and that the demand for GDRs continues to be strong in Taiwan.

China.com share offering has a list of uncertainties; company's ties to Beijing may keep potential investors from feeling content
Article Abstract:
China.com Corp has issued an initial public offering and is scheduled to list on the Nasdaq Stock Market in Jul 1999. The operator of Chinese-language portals hopes to raise $56 million by going public but its history of losses amounting to $8.5 million in 1998, a string of abandoned business plans and collapsed partnerships may make investors wary. One of its appeals to foreign investors, however, is its ties to the influential government-run Xinhua news agency which will own 11% of the firm after the initial public offering.

Mitac takes on the U.S
Article Abstract:
Mitac International Corp. is acquiring US retailer ComputerLand Corp. from financially troubled Merisel Inc. in a bid to join the US retailing market. Analysts, however, believe the purchase may hold risks for Mitac since it will increasingly be expected to provide more services to users. The Taiwan-based computer cloner hopes ComputerLand's extensive network across the US will help Mitac reverse its dismal earnings through goods exposure on store shelves. The company expects to earn $2 billion in 1997 from its US sales.
