Galena decreases the number of its employees

Galena (Opava, Czech Republic), pharmaceutical firm, will dismiss 150 employees within its restructuring by the end of 1999. The firm expects the measure to increase productivity of labour and efficiency of production. The company, which produces 67 human and 15 veterinary medicines, wants to export 85% of its production prospectively compared to the current 60%. In 1999 the firm should invest about 340 mil Kc, mainly in the development of new products and a new control structure. In 1998 Galena saw a loss of 265 mil Kc due to problems on the eastern markets. The firm saw a profit of 97 mil Kc for the first half of 1999.

Galena Opava profitable again

Galena (Opava, Czech Republic), pharmaceutical firm, will dismiss 150 employees by the end of 1999 to raise efficiency and within restructuring. During January-June 1999 the firm generated a profit of 97.2 mil Kc. In 1998 it saw a loss of 265 mil Kc compared to a profit of 254 mil Kc in 1997. Its proceeds declined from 2.155 bil Kc in 1997 to 1.596 bil Kc in 1998. The reason for the drop in 1998 was the Asian and Russian crisis. Both the territories are among Galena's target export markets, 15% of the firm's total exports going to Russia. Galena also exports to Italy, Slovakia, Japan and North Korea.

Galena is back in the black

Galena (Opava, Czech Republic), pharmaceutical firm, saw a net profit of 166 mil Kc in 1999 compared to a loss of 265 mil Kc in 1998. Galena exports about 70% of its production, mainly to Russia, Slovakia and the Ukraine. In 1999 the company invested 278 mil Kc. Over 1998-1999, 55% of the firm's total investment went to production, 15% to information technologies and 16% to environmental protection. Galena's majority shareholder, Ivax (US), invested 1.6 bil Kc in the company during 1994-1999.
