Article Abstract:
The UK's regional economy is under threat due to structural problems related to stockmarket investors. The price-earnings ratio in small firms, which are often based in the regions, is low. They also find it difficult to raise capital from new issues even if their prospects and management are strong. This situation has arisen because London-based institutional investors have grown bigger and fund managers are afraid of going against the trend of giving greater proportions of funds to fewer major stocks. PricewaterhouseCoopers employee Brian Woods-Scawen offers some solutions for this problem.

Article Abstract:
Patricia Hewitt, UK Minister for small business an e-commerce, wants the UK to have an environment in which it is easier to set up in businesses, aided by tax policy and legislation. There are plans to change the law on bankruptcy, which should have an impact on the perception of failure, according to Hewitt. She believes that the Small Business Service, established by the government, will result in great progress in the sector.
