Giulio Andreotti, lingering symbol of Italy
Article Abstract:
Giulio Andreotti, founder of Italy's Christian Democrats, has been acquitted of protecting the Mafia in Rome. He has been prime minister of Italy seven times, and could have been president if scandals had not prevented this. The magistrates who lost cases against him were seen as partisan in political terms, and relying overmuch on evidence from pentiti. The Christian Democrats have split up with former members joining 12 political parties between them, but the influence of Andreotti is still apparent.
