Global arms manufacturers are true winners of China-Taiwan game of follow the leader
Article Abstract:
Tension between China and Taiwan has intensified in recent months, in large part due to Chinese threats and attempts at intimidation. The rising hostility has spurred an arms race between the two, with both sides spending billions of dollars in a tit-for-tat effort to acquire weapons that will put them on equal footing with the other. There are indications that Taiwan is planning a 20% increase in its $9.55 billion defense budget to counter China's acquisition of modern fighter aircraft from Russia.

Beijing's aim in unnerving Taiwan may be backfiring
Article Abstract:
China's attempts to influence Taiwanese voters by using military maneuvers may be backfiring. China began military exercises in the narrow strait that separates Taiwan from China to intimidate Taiwan into agreeing to a direct presidential elections. In contrast to China's expected results, the Taiwanese only strengthened their support for Pres. Lee Teng-hui. Some Taiwanese say that China's threats of an invasion influenced their decision to support Lee.
