Going ballistic: American intelligence reports that Pakistan has deployed Chinese M-11 missiles could hurt Sino-U.S. relations and raise the security stakes in the Subcontinent
Article Abstract:
Reports from US intelligence sources that Pakistan has acquired M-11 ballistic missiles from China, and possibly nuclear technology as well, complicates politics in Washington and efforts to complete a nuclear test ban treaty. The reports, on June 12 and 13, 1996, place pressure on the Clinton administration to sanction China and Pakistan, just as debate starts up over renewal of China's Most Favored Nation trading status. India calls the reports nothing new, but they harden its resistance to military restraint.

Studies ambiguity
Article Abstract:
Pakistani leaders believe their resistance to US pressure to unilaterally sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty has paid off in US recognition of their position. They say their vagueness about the precise state of Pakistan's nuclear program has prevented war with India. Meanwhile, US scholars say the relation between those two countries will define any South Asian policy on nuclear weapons.
