Going underground
Article Abstract:
The underground railway network, London, England, caters for up to 3 million passengers daily. Although it is in a poor condition it does provide opportunities for expansion. The underground started as several separate lines which were connected in 1884 by the construction of the Circle Line. Although the whole network did not conform to one standard until after the introduction of electrification. The network became state owned in 1933. Investment has been patchy and by the 1990s an additional 1.5 billion pounds sterling was required. The Jubilee Line Extension was opened in 1999.
