Green light for businesses: Peter Holden Architects has masterplanned a green business park in Wales, and designed its first factory unit
Article Abstract:
Peter Holden Architects was invited by the Development Board for Rural Wales to design a series of green buildings on a chosen site nearly Machynlleth, Powys. The site contained low toxicity ground contamination from its former railway use and this was dealt with by on-site containment with no materials transported off site. The site incorporates light canopy trees and features a woven willow wall to create a visual, acoustic and dust barrier. The first building has been completed and features Welsh semi-durable softwoods and other local source natural materials. It also has high standards of insulation and draughtproofing. A cost analaysis is provided.

Designed to lift the spirits: the Richard Attenborough Centre, designed by Ian Taylor with Bennetts Associates, uses space, light, colour, texture and atmosphere in a way that allows disabled people fully to share artistic facilities
Article Abstract:
The Richard Attenborough Centre for Disability and the Arts at the University of Leicester, was designed by architect Ian Taylor of Bennetts Associates, inspired by the client's vision. The aim was for a building that would not limit expression, and circulation relies on a simple H-pattern on every floor, to help blind users. Circulation areas have textured concrete paving, with other areas having timber floors and textured tiled floors, to provide good tonal contrast for those with partial sight. The structure and acoustics of the building are described, together with working details for the frameless glass rooflight, and a cost analysis.

Specifier's choice: Charities Aid Foundation
Article Abstract:
The Charities Aid Foundation headquarters building features perimeter radiator heating and controllable mechanical ventilation. The construction management contract allowed the architect relative freedom with specification, and enabled the frame to be started before the finer details about design are decided on. Trade contracts were custom written and there is no main contractor, allowing more flexibility. Design input from subcontractors was encouraged.
