Greener coatings for steelwork
Article Abstract:
The use of compliant coatings by designers is being encouraged by a new report from CIRIA, which suggests that emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be reduced and prevented by their use as coatings. The report, called New Paint Systems for the Protection of Construction Steelwork, aims to clarify issues surrounding compliant coatings especially with regard to the levels of VOC's permitted under the Environmental Protection Act 1996. The report suggests time and money could be saved by using high solid epoxies, which can be applied quickly and at cooler temperatures.

Fire in the pipeline
Article Abstract:
Reform of fire precaution legislation is being considered by the UK government, to make the regulations more comprehensive yet easier for the public to understand. The Fire Precautions Act 1971 has been criticised for not providing freedom to assess individual risk, being too restrictive and not educating people to the risk of fire. Most fire deaths occur in residential houses but the government feels it can only educate occupiers rather than legislate for individual properties.
