Foreign funds take a tiny bite out of Asian debt market

Foreign mutual funds that invest in Asian bonds are not as popular as equity funds due to decreases in foreign-debt issues. Local high-yield bonds have not performed well recently, and they may be subject to withholding taxes. Unstable investment practices in Asia also contribute to the low demand for bond funds.

Closed-end mutual funds may be an option for investors during volatile times. These mutual funds are traded on a stock exchange, and investors can buy or sell them just like trading stocks. However, the liquidity of closed-end funds is often less than open-end funds.

'Guaranteed' funds lure the risk averse; these products promise to limit losses, but beware of the catches
Article Abstract:
Guaranteed-investment products are particularly attractive to investors because it offers some degree of capital protection during bad markets. As Asia's volatile markets experience a downturn, a growing number of funds are being offered to displace losses incurred by traditional stock funds. Investing in guaranteed-investment products requires a large initial layout which is put in short-term bonds or in a money-market account.
