HEAVY TAXES MAKE THINGS CLOY FOR INDIAN SUGAR COS
Article Abstract:
Heavy taxes and uneconomic prices have affected the growth of the Indian sugar industry. According to Mr OP Dhanuka, the former president of Indian Sugar Mills Association (India), India is the highest producer of cane sugar in the world and also one of the heavily taxed industries in the world. Currently, the industry pays a number of taxes such as cane cess, purchase tax, market fees and zonal development commission to the state government. It also pays sales tax to the Government of India. In India, even the by-products of sugar industry are heavily taxed. Though sugar factories in the under-developed areas of India produce international quality sugar without any proper infrastructure, they do not get proper support from the government. The Government of India has allowed free import of sugar under the Open General License route when the local industry has a huge stock of 5.5 million tonnes. (ag)(vr)
