HIGHLY POLLUTING INDUSTRIES MAY BE KEPT AWAY FROM CITIES
Article Abstract:
The Ministry of Environment and Forestry has drafted a notification which bans setting up of high-polluting industries within 25 km range from the cities with a population of one million. These industries will also be not allowed within 7 km of national parks, municipal Corporation, wetlands, sanctuaries and biosphere reserves. The Government of India will allow setting up of such industries in 7-25 km belt near parks, wetlands and biosphere reserves only after environmental impact assessment. The industries categorised as highly polluting are; petroleum refineries, chemical fertilisers, petrochemical complexes, metallurgical industries, distilleries, tanneries, dyes and dye intermediates, pesticides, bulk drugs and pharmaceuticals, pulp, paper and cement. These industries will also be not allowed within 7 km range of archaeological monuments. (rk)

COURT ORDERS STERLITE TO HALT OPERATION AT SMELTER PLANT
Article Abstract:
The Green Bench of the Madras High Court has issued orders to Sterlite Industries (India) Ltd (SIIL) to immediately stop operations at its copper smelter plant at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu. This follows another accident at the plant in the second week of November 1998. The bench also took note of the report by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (Neeri) at Nagpur. About 90 woman workers fainted at the plant in 1997, while a rotary holding furnace blast resulted in the death of 2 persons. (uh)
