HSBC USA posts 2.3% first-half rise in its pretax income

HSBC Holdings PLC's HSBC USA Inc. unit posted an improvement of 2.3% in its pretax income for the first-half of 1999. The unit reported $393 million (368.9 million euros) in pretax income for the period. During the same period in 1998, HSBC USA posted $384 million. A $15 million gain from the sell-off of a California student-loan business helped the company's figures.

EFG Eurobank pretax profit soared in 1st half

EFG Eurobank posted an improvement in its pretax profits for the first-half of 1999. The Greek bank's profits increased by more than sevenfold in the period. EFG's pretax profits reached 73.06 billion drachmas (224.7 million euros). During the same period in 1998, EFG posted 9.41 billion drachmas. The bank is the third-largest in Greece in terms of assets.
