Handel: Ausverkauf geht weiter
Article Abstract:
Subject to the approval of the cartel authorities, the German trade giant Rewe of Cologne is to take over the supermarket division of the family-owned Austrian trade group Julius Meinl in a deal backdated to the beginning of 1998. Rewe, which acquired another Austrian supermarket chain Billa two years ago and holds 32.5% of the Austrian market, takes over 343 outlets of Meinl, which has a 6.9% market share. In 1997 the Meinl division which operates Meinl, Pam-Pam and J supermarkets, made a loss of about Sch 89mn on a gross turnover of about Sch 10bn. The deal will raise Rewe's food retail trade turnover in Austria to about DM 10bn. The outlets bought from Meinl will be renamed Billa, Bipa and Merkur stores. The deal does not include Julius Meinl Industrie, a producer of coffee, marmalade and meat; Julius Meinl Europa, which is to set up gourmet stores in other European cities beside the Vienna one; Julius Meinl International which operates supermarkets in eastern Europe and produces coffee in eastern Europe and Italy; Meinl Bank; and the real property division Julius Meinl Immobilien. Austria's economics minister Johann Farnleitner wants to prevent the takeover, after German groups already control also Adeg (12.8% market share), L wa (5.1%) and Hofer. Spar remains the second-largest supermarket chain in Austria, with a market share of 27.1%.
