Hard decade at the office
Article Abstract:
Organisational change at work has led to employees having to work longer as a result of the reduction in staff in many large companies. A study carried out by the Institute of Management found some 77% of managers, in the UK, worked longer than the hours they were contracted to work, each week. Workers also felt less secure in their work. Some 75% of middle managers admitted their morale at work had decreased. Almost two out of three managers confirmed their firms had undergone some form of reorganisation between 1996-98. The 1998 study involved 5,000 managers.

A life on the edge
Article Abstract:
Flexible labor has become a fashionable euphemism for changes in labor practices, with short-term contracts and freelance work becoming more common. There are more part-timers and self-employed people and companies are increasingly using home-workers, with an estimated 2.5 million already working from hoem in the United Kingdom, according to BT. This trend creates management problem such as communication, and workers have to balance work and home. There is also a problem of ensuring commitment from a work force that is suffering from insecurity.

Any time, any place?
Article Abstract:
There is evidence that 50% of UK employees would like to have the opportunity to telecommute. However, 76% of employers do not have a policy on telecommuting at all. Encouraging higher levels of telecommuting could have significant benefits in reducing pressure on transportation services and in cutting environmental damage resulting from traffic congestion. A report from Mitel, Symantec and consultancy The Home Office Partnership also indicates that telecommuting could create a more productive working environment.
