Partitioned city: the West Bank
Article Abstract:
The divided city of Hebron recovered from a new wave of violence by July 14, 1997. The violence was caused by an Israeli woman's drawing depicting the Prophet Mohammad in a derogatory manner. The peace in Hebron is tentative, as Israelis continue to move into the Palestinian sector. The collapse of the Oslo agreement has intensified Israeli security efforts on behalf of its Hebron citizens. The riots wounded 500 Palestinians, with half under the age of 18. The Palestinian sector holds 80% of the land area in Hebron.

The Union's sticky treaty
Article Abstract:
There is a need to revise the treaties of the European Union (EU), though the last revision, in 1997, was time-consuming. Three issues were left until later in the 1997 negotiations, and they are majority voting in the Council of Ministers, allocating votes in line with population, and controlling numbers of commissioners in the European Commission, or executive arm of the EU. Other items such as defense could also be discussed, and this could involve reviving the Western European Union.
