Traditionalists in Bangladesh are increasingly criticising the role of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), which they claim are disrupting the country's social structures. NGOs are now focusing on social issues such as empowering women, but this is aggravating secular-religious tensions.

Private charities such as Oxfam and Save the Children are doing the tasks that national governments usually do in aiding needy countries such as Somalia and Rwanda. There is little enthusiasm by donors to people in these countries because their plights are no longer in the media.
