Hero Honda roars ahead, running circles around rivals

Hero Honda Motors, the leading motorcycle manufacturer in India, saw its 1998 net profit increased by a high of 41% to 229 million rupees on a revenue growth of 24%, up from 1997. The growth is fueled by the progress of motorcycle buyers that include small-scale businesses and farmers in the country's rural areas. Hero Honda, which concentrates its market on the production of motorcycles, has consistently registered bolstered earnings, said UTI Securities head of research Narender Nagpal. The company could also increase its net profit by 31% to one billion rupees on sales of 13.8 billion rupees in the year ending March 31, 1999, he projects.
