High-tech traffic
Article Abstract:
Intelligent transportation systems can tell travelers which routes to use, which is an advance compared to radio information on traffic congestion. The Department of Transportation is using a system in Seattle, providing maps viewed 300,000 times per day by Internet users, and soon to be available through cable TV. Commuters can time journeys to avoid congestion. They can also receive customized information by using pagers. There are a number of companies involved in providing customized information, and non-profit projects are also being developed.

Unwired
Article Abstract:
Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, are creating a wire-free local area network (LAN) known as Wireless Andrew. Users of the LAN are automatically connected to a whole network via their laptop. The network will soon have 400 base stations around the campus. The base stations are able to channel 2 megabits of data a second to each computer in their cell, around a thousand times more than a standard modem. Users who go beyond the LAN's range are automatically switched to the city's mobile telephone network.
