Hitachi's snail-like progress
Article Abstract:
Hitachi is a major Japanese company which is the largest of Japan's three major electrical groups, and the company is to report a loss. The group has been slow to carry out restructuring, but plans to shed 4,000 employees by the end of 1998-1999. This will be carried out by shedding workers in subsidiaries not appearing on Hitachi's boks, and not replacing workers who retire. The company has been slow to develop new products, and the reforms will still leave excess capacity.
